Who I Am

Someone who cares…. deeply.

Gregory Warren Burgess was born in San Francisco and raised in the natural beauty of Marin County, California. From an early age, he was drawn to writing, discovering a love for it while attending Tam High. This interest would later become a driving force in his life, providing an outlet for his creative energy and a medium through which he would connect with others.

After high school, he embarked on a life-changing adventure in his twenties, sailing around the world. The experience was transformative, offering him a unique perspective on different cultures and the resilience of the human spirit. As he sailed across the Pacific, he was struck by the vastness of the world and how humanity's struggles mirrored the unpredictability of the sea. This journey shaped not only his worldview but also his creative vision, which he later infused into his writing.

Following his time at sea, he was a volunteer English teacher in Indonesia for a year, where he worked with students from diverse backgrounds. This experience further deepened his appreciation for language as a bridge between cultures and a tool for empowerment. Greg’s time in Indonesia also reinforced his belief in the importance of education and cross-cultural exchange.

Upon returning to the United States, he began a career in special education, working as a teacher for ten years. He focused on students with diverse learning needs, ranging from autism spectrum disorder to learning disabilities. His philosophy was grounded in the belief that every child, regardless of their challenges, had the potential to succeed.

His professional journey then took him into the realm of public health when he joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a Public Health Officer. During his two years at the CDC he contributed to disease prevention initiatives and epidemiological research. His work in public health deepened his understanding of global health issues.

In the further evolution of his career, he became involved in the development of a groundbreaking medical device that measures patient blood loss during surgery using the Apple iPhone and iPad. This innovative technology provided real-time data for surgeons, improving surgical outcomes and enhancing patient care. His work on this device was a culmination of his interests in healthcare and technology, allowing him to combine both fields in a way that directly benefited medical professionals and patients alike.

Despite his busy career, he was always maintained a strong connection to the Bay Area and its waters. He enjoys day sailing on the San Francisco Bay. Sailing has been a constant source of inspiration, and he has used the experiences and insights gained from his time on the water in both his professional and creative endeavors.

He also has a close-knit family, with two nephews who are currently in college. He takes great pride in their achievements and has always served as a source of guidance and encouragement. While he has never married, his deep connections with his family, particularly with his nephews, have provided him with a sense of fulfillment and joy.

Throughout his life, writing has remained a central passion. His adventures, professional experiences, and personal journey have all influenced his work. He believes that storytelling holds the power to inspire and connect people, and he has dedicated much of his life to creating stories that explore themes of human resilience, discovery, and the relationship between humanity and the world around them.

Whether through fiction, memoir, or science fiction, his writing has been shaped by his life’s experiences. He sees writing not just as a profession but as a calling, one that allows him to explore the depths of human nature and share the lessons he has learned. His life story is a testament to the importance of adventure, learning, and personal growth, and he hopes to continue sharing his stories with the world for many years to come.
